Republic of Ireland international James McClean has been nominated for the PFA Vertu Fans’ Player of the Month for October 2021. The Irish winger was rewarded for his impressive outings in the colours of the Latics during the period under review.

His best performance of the month came in the game against Bolton Wanderers as he scored two times to lead Wigan Athletic to an emphatic 4-0 victory at the home of their opponents. The ex-West Brom man also found the back of the net in victories over AFC Wimbledon and Burton Albion.

James McClean is one of six players nominated for the abovementioned award. The other nominees areAccrington Stanley star Harry Pell, Conor Grant of Plymouth Argyle, Oxford United player Matty Taylor, Ryan Tafazolli of Wycombe Wanderers and Rotherham United star Michael Smith.

McClean has been a top performer this season for a Wigan Athletic side chasing automatic promotion to the English Championship ahead of next season. He was part of the Wigan Athletic XI that came from two goals down to beat hosts Fleetwood Town 3-2. The Latics had trailed two-nil at the half-time break and into the final half hour only for them to score three goals in that final half hour to win the game and make it two successive wins as far as League One football is concerned.

Wigan Athletic were able to maintain their place at the League One summit with the comeback win over Fleetwood Town. The Latics have a one-point lead over Plymouth Argyle in second place on the log and they have three points more than both Rotherham United and Wycombe Wanderers in third and fourth position respectively. Wigan Athletic have 34 points from 16 games, Rotherham and Wycombe have 31 points apiece.
