                PREDICTING THE OUTCOME OF WIGAN ATHLETIC’S FIRST 3 FIXTURES

The start of the 2022/23 Championship campaign is just around the corner as Leam Richardson’s men prepare for their return to the second tier. It was an impressive campaign for the Latics who were crowned as League One champions on the last day of the season. But the transfer window has been a relatively quiet one so far for the club, who are yet to bring in anyone of note. Here we look at Wigan Athletic’s three five fixtures in their 2022/23 Championship campaign and try to predict the outcome of each…

Preston North End (H)

As Ryan Lowe enters his first full season as Preston North End boss, he will surely be looking to improve upon last term’s shortcomings. The Lancashire club have already brought in a number of big hitters with players such as Ben Woodburn and Robbie Brady set to play for the Lilywhites next season. Preston North End have already improved a number of positions and could overwhelm the Latics as they may not have fully adjusted to the step up in divisions. (more…)

WIGAN TO RIVAL SUNDERLAND FOR

Sunderland will have to fend off the interest of Wigan Athletic in Everton loanee Nathan Broadhead if they want to sign the striker permanently. The two newly promoted English Championship clubs are set to battle it out for Broadhead during this summer’s transfer window as revealed by media outlet Liverpool World.


Wigan Athletic are back in the Championship after winning automatic promotion, while Sunderland won promotion via the playoffs. The Latics won the League One title to secure promotion to the Championship, while the Black Cats beat Wycombe Wanderers 2-0 in the League One playoff final to end a four-year wait to return to the Championship. Elliott Emberton and Ross Stewart scored for the Black Cats either side of the break to seal their Championship promotion.Wigan Athletic target Broadhead played his part to help Sunderland secure Championship football for the new season. WIGAN RELEASE PILKINGTON, OTHERS

League One outfit Fleetwood Town have confirmed the release of former Wigan Athletic star Anthony Pilkington. The news of his release was confirmed via a statement from the club earlier this week. It was stated that the former Wigan Athletic winger will leave Fleetwood Town when his current deal with the club expires at the end of next month.


A Fleetwood Town statement revealed that veteran winger Pilkington will leave the club this summer alongside Callum Camps, Harrison Biggins and Kieran O’Hara. Camps, Biggins and O’Hara are in the same situation as Pilkington as their respective contracts with the League One club will expire at the end of June 2022. (more…)

RUDIGER, JAMES SET FOR CHELSEA RETURN

The Chelsea duo of Reece James and Antonio Rudiger are on course to return from injury ahead of the rescheduled Premier League encounter with hosts Manchester United. Former Wigan Athletic star James and German defender Rudiger bothmissed the 1-0 home win over London rivals West Ham United in the league on Sunday due to injury, but they could return for the game at Old Trafford on Thursday night.


England international James has grown to be the first choice right wingback at Chelsea since he returned from a loan spell at Wigan Athletic a few years ago. James cut his professional football teeth at Wigan Athletic where he impressed a great deal before returning toChelsea while Frank Lampard was the manager three years ago. James missed the London Derby league game with West Ham United on Sunday after he had discomfort in his hamstrings as revealed by Blues boss Thomas Tuchel during his pre-match reaction ahead of the latest Premier League meeting with the Hammers.                        WIGAN SET TO WELCOME BACK PEARCE FROM INJURY

In what will come as a brilliant news for Wigan Athletic and their fans, they are srt to welcome back their star player Tom Pearce back from injury. Wigan helped the player mark a return from injury for the first time and played the left-back for their Under-23s yesterday against Sheffield Wednesday. Pearce, 23, got some valuable minutes under his belt for the development side.


The full-back has been out with an injury he picked up against Arsenal Under-21s in late January. He has missed the past 10 games in all competitions for the Latics but is closing in on his return now. Speaking after their win against Fleetwood Town last night, Leam Richardson told the official club twitter account that all their players can be regarded as big players because they all have big roles to play for the club in all of their matches. He said that Joe Bennett has worked tirelessly hard to come back from injury as well. (more…)

WIGAN ATHLETIC SNAP UP JAMIE MCGRATH

League One promotion hopefuls Wigan Athletic have snapped up St Mirren Jamie McGrath have signed a two-year and a half contract with the club. The Latics snapped up the player who had just six months left on his contract from the Scottish side. St Mirren had been keen to tie the player on a new contract but had to accept losing him now instead of being a free agent in the summer.

Jamie McGrath who has had a sort of revival over the last year, got his first call up to the Irish National team last year. The 25-year-old ended the year by making 6 appearances as Ireland tried to fight for a spot at the world cup later in the year. The player made his football debut for St. Patrick Athletic where he won back-to-back League Cups in 2015 and 2016. He won the Club’s Young Player of the year in 2016 before being snapped up at Dundalk.

MAGENNIS AGREES WIGAN DEAL

Hull City striker Josh Magennis has agreed a deal to return to League One to play for Wigan Athletic. According to The Athletic, Magennis has decided to leave English Championship side Hull City to sign for the Latics.

Magennis is expected to sign a two-and-a-half year deal with Wigan Athletic until the end of the 2023/24 season. He has started 18 of the 24 Championship games for Hull City this season, but club officials have given him the permission to make the move across the Pennines. The Northern Ireland international striker has six months left on his current deal with the Tigers.

JANUARY EXIT LIKELY FOR WIGAN DUO

Wigan Athletic suffered demotion from the English Championship two seasons after they had points deducted for going into administration. The Latics thenfinished just above the relegation last season as they narrowly missed out on demotion to League Two football. Wigan Athletic occupied the last safe place on the League One table at the end of last season.

The Lyrics have been able to assemble a star-studded squad for a League One team and they are on course to seal promotion to the English Championship at the end of this season as predicted before the current season started in August. As things stand in League One football, Wigan Athletic are second on the league table and they have the same points (41) as Rotherham United in first place and Wycombe Wanderers in third place. The Latics have played one more game than league leaders Rotherham United and two more games than Wycombe Wanderers.

WIGAN MAN NOMINATED FOR MONTHLY AWARD

Republic of Ireland international James McClean has been nominated for the PFA Vertu Fans’ Player of the Month for October 2021. The Irish winger was rewarded for his impressive outings in the colours of the Latics during the period under review.


McClean was one of the best players for Wigan Athletic in League One last month, bagging four goals in six games. His best performance of the month came in the game against Bolton Wanderers as he scored two times to lead Wigan Athletic to an emphatic 4-0 victory at the home of their opponents. The ex-West Brom man also found the back of the net in victories over AFC Wimbledon and Burton Albion. (more…)

WIGAN TO FACE BEST TEAM – EVATT

Bolton Wanderers manager Ian Evatt is certain that WiganAtheltic would be facing the best team in League One when the two clubs meet at the weekend.


Ian Evatt has led Bolton Wanderers to eighth spot on the League One standings but he believes that his team should be higher than the current position on the log.The Bolton Wanderers was speaking ahead of the home game with Wigan Athletic later this week. He went on to say that it’s not about arrogance or overconfidence, but he’s of the opinion that Bolton Wanderers have been the best team based on performance. (more…)
