WIGAN RELEASE PILKINGTON, OTHERS

Posted on May 20, 2022 in WAFC

League One outfit Fleetwood Town have confirmed the release of former Wigan Athletic star Anthony Pilkington. The news of his release was confirmed via a statement from the club earlier this week. It was stated that the former Wigan Athletic winger will leave Fleetwood Town when his current deal with the club expires at the end of next month.

A Fleetwood Town statement revealed that veteran winger Pilkington will leave the club this summer alongside Callum Camps, Harrison Biggins and Kieran O’Hara. Camps, Biggins and O’Hara are in the same situation as Pilkington as their respective contracts with the League One club will expire at the end of June 2022.

Irish winger Pilkington has Premier League experience after playing for Norwich City as recent as 2014. He also enjoyed spells at Welsh team Cardiff City and Wigan Athletic. The 33-year-old signed for Fleetwood Town at the start of the just concluded season. The attacker was given a one-year deal by Fleetwood Town when he signed for them last summer. The Republic of Ireland international has a few weeks left on that one-year contract and it has already been confirmed that there would be no contract extension for him at the club. The winger had a return of four goals in 28 appearances as the club failed to make the League One playoffs at least.

While the likes of Camps, Pilkington, Biggins and O’Hara will leave the club at the end of this season, Fleetwood Town also confirmed via a statement on their website that they have renewed the contracts of some of their players. It was stated that Toto Nsiala and Ellis Anderson have agreed respective new contracts at the League One outfit. A one-year contract extension has also been triggered for Tom Clarke after the player met the required number of games for the extension.
